Andrew Shea and I founded the Lab for AI, Ethics, and Creative Labor at The New School in 2024.

Our goals are to better understand how creative workers are using and being asked to use AI technologies so that we can bring workers together to agitate for the kinds of AI they want to see in the world, and to experiment and promote creative uses of AI that will add to (not subtract from) this world’s flourishing. We organize reading groups and film screenings, hold labor convenings and develop tools and guides to question the ethics of AI.

Meg Salcup and I are working on an anthropological approach to AI that may take the form of an edited volume, tentatively titled An Anthropology of AI: Sociotechnical Inquiries.

With the amazing Trustworthy Infrastructures Team at the Data and Society Research Institute, I published a primer on Trust and Technologies, which took a relational approach to trust and investigated how trust moves across institution contexts.Rather than tracing trust as a substance that can be increased or decreased, we focus on trust as a process that comes to constitute and is constituted by historical processes.
